Role Summary:

The Lead Hydro Field Engineer (HFE) is the site lead on customer services / repairs and owns the execution of the technical solution developed in conjunction with the engineered solution but in real life safe, practical and sometimes innovative ways with the approval of engineering. The HFE is responsible for supervision of the crew to meet and exceed the proposed solution accepted by the customer.

Essential Responsibilities:

As the Lead Hydro Field Engineer, you will:

  • Perform collateral duties as assigned to meet business needs as they relate to EHS, Quality, Integrity, Compliance, etc. per engineered solutions in a partnering manner with the customer

  • Assist with proposals, technical solution development, interfacing with Application Engineers and providing customer insights and market intelligence on pricing, scopes and execution

  • Provide excellent technical expertise related to: Hydro generator stators, rotors and BoP items

  • Provide and direct the performance of the crew members and subcontractors with oversight to all quality levels in services to all methods and processes in the assigned work scopes

  • Utilize local businesses to the site in a cooperative manner maintaining cost and quality levels

  • Provide the technical leadership with the customer’s operations personnel to service solution

  • Develop and capture technical problem-solving knowledge, communicating with other organizations to enable effective resolution of customer problems and inquiries

  • Perform field engineering service insights to properly serve the local customers including generator stator rewinding and all related tasks

  • Identify product failures and assist in identifying possible root causes

  • Manage communication among internal organizations and customer personnel to ensure effective product support and customer satisfaction

  • Distribute information on customer issues so that all members of customer support team share common understanding and objectives

  • Participate in business planning including budgeting / staffing / forecasting / cost control


  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university or college (or a High School Diploma / GED with a minimum of 5 years of experience in a support or field engineering position)

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in a field engineering role


  • Ability and willingness to travel and complete overnight stays, 80% of the time

Desired Characteristics:

  • Accountable for the full scope related to the full repair of the hydro generator stator and rotor including all testing processes: Comprehension of stator and rotor connections, Brazing of copper connections, Electrical testing on stators and rotor poles, Winding processes related to removal and insertion of coils / bars, Core iron replace / repair processes

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering

  • Strong oral and written communication skills

  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills

  • PC proficiency

  • Team leader in a dynamic, energetic, and proactive environment

  • Six Sigma training or equivalent quality training
