Position Summary

Bowdoin College invites applications for a one-year full-time Visiting Assistant Professor of Art History in the field of Medieval or Northern Renaissance art to begin July 1, 2018. Open to scholars specializing in any subfield of the art of Europe and the Mediterranean between the third century and the sixteenth century. Applicants demonstrating an interest in cross-cultural connections within and beyond those spheres are of particular interest. Possible two-year extension of this appointment after a review during the first year. Ph.D. by time of appointment is required, so, highly advanced ABDs expecting to have degree in hand are encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate must demonstrate a capacity for excellence in teaching, active engagement in research, and a commitment to undergraduate liberal arts education; previous undergraduate teaching experience preferred. Teaching load is two courses each semester and could include participation in the department’s team-taught introductory course, a pair of classes within the chronological and geographic parameters described above, and one advanced seminar each year on a topic connected to the instructor’s particular expertise or research interests. Bowdoin’s faculty frequently make use of the collections and exhibitions in the Bowdoin College Museum of Art, whose encyclopedic holdings include examples of Medieval and Renaissance art; the BCMA’s collection of fifteenth- and sixteenth-century prints is particularly rich. The Special Collections department of the Bowdoin Library also houses a fine teaching collection of manuscripts and early printed books.
